Beejamrutham: The Organic Seed Treatment That Costs Nothing
How to make and use Beejamrutham — the ZBNF seed treatment that protects seeds from soil fungi, inoculates with beneficial microbes, and boosts germination 15–25%.
Beejamrutham (Seed Treatment)
Beejamrutham is a liquid seed treatment used in ZBNF to protect seeds from soil-borne fungi, inoculate with beneficial microbes, and improve germination — all for near-zero cost.
"Beeji" = seed, "Amrutham" = nectar/life-giving
What It Does
- Creates a protective microbial coating on each seed
- The calcium hydroxide (lime) + urine combination creates a mild antifungal environment around the germinating seed
- Suppresses seed-borne pathogens (Fusarium, Aspergillus)
- Boosts germination rate by 15–25% in trials
Ingredients (for 20L — treats ~10kg seed)
| Ingredient | Quantity | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Water | 20 L | Base |
| Fresh cow dung (desi cow) | 5 kg | Microbial source |
| Cow urine (fresh) | 5 L | Antimicrobial + activator |
| Slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) | 50 g | Antifungal, mild alkalinity |
| Soil from base of old tree | 1 handful | Indigenous microbial species |
Preparation
- Mix cow dung in 20L water, stir well
- Filter through cloth to remove large particles
- Add cow urine to filtered liquid
- Dissolve 50g slaked lime in small amount of water, add to mixture
- Add soil from tree base
- Stir thoroughly
No fermentation needed — Beejamrutham is used fresh. No waiting.
Shelf life: Use within 3 days of preparation.
How to Apply
For Seeds:
- Soak seeds in Beejamrutham for 24 hours
- Drain and dry in shade (not sun — UV kills beneficial microbes on seed surface)
- Sow within 24 hours of removing from treatment
For Transplant Roots (Seedlings):
- Dip roots in full-strength Beejamrutham for 20–30 minutes
- Transplant immediately
Which Crops Benefit Most
All field crops benefit, but especially:
- Paddy (protects against seed-borne blast, seedling blight)
- Legumes (good with Rhizobium — apply Rhizobium after Beejamrutham treatment, not together)
- Vegetables (protects against damping-off)
- Wheat (seed-borne smut, rusts)
Note on Rhizobium: If you're also inoculating legume seeds with Rhizobium, apply Beejamrutham first, dry the seed, then coat with Rhizobium + jaggery solution. The lime in Beejamrutham can reduce Rhizobium viability if applied simultaneously.
Cost
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Desi cow dung | Free (own cow) |
| Cow urine | Free (own cow) |
| Slaked lime (50g) | ₹2–3 |
| Total per 20L batch | Near zero |
Compared to commercial seed treatment fungicides (Thiram, Captan): ₹150–400 per kg seed. Beejamrutham achieves comparable protection at virtually zero cost.
