Agniastra

Agniastra (เค…เค—เฅเคจเคฟ = fire, เค…เคธเฅเคคเฅเคฐ = weapon) is a fermented plant extract spray for controlling sucking and chewing insect pests. Developed by Subhash Palekar as part of the ZBNF pest management toolkit.

Ingredients

IngredientQuantityPurpose
Cow urine20 LBase + activator
Desi tobacco leaves (untreated)3 kgNicotine โ€” contact insecticide
Green chili (hot)3 kgCapsaicin โ€” repellent + contact irritant
Garlic500 gAllicin โ€” repellent + antifungal
Neem leaves (fresh)3 kgAzadirachtin โ€” systemic repellent

Preparation

  1. Bring cow urine to a boil in a large vessel
  2. Add all ingredients while boiling
  3. Boil together for 5 minutes, stirring continuously
  4. Remove from heat, cover, ferment for 24 hours
  5. Strain through fine cloth
  6. Ready to use

Shelf life: 3 months stored in shade in sealed container.

How It Works

  • Nicotine (tobacco): Systemic contact insecticide โ€” affects insect nervous system. One of the oldest insecticides known (used since 1600s).
  • Capsaicin (chili): Strong repellent to most insects. Creates feeding deterrence.
  • Allicin (garlic): Natural organosulfur compound โ€” repels and disrupts insect feeding behavior.
  • Azadirachtin (neem): Insect growth regulator โ€” disrupts molting, pupation, and reproduction. Systemic effect lasts 7โ€“10 days.

Together these create multiple modes of action โ€” reducing resistance risk that single-mode pesticides create.

Application

Dilution: 3% concentration = 30 mL Agniastra per 1 L water

How to apply:

  • Fine mist spray covering both sides of leaves
  • Morning or evening application (avoid midday heat)
  • Repeat every 5โ€“7 days if pest pressure is high; every 10โ€“14 days preventively

Target Pests

Works against most sucking and chewing insects:

  • Aphids, mealybugs, whiteflies, thrips
  • Caterpillars (partially โ€” Bt is more specific)
  • Leaf miners
  • Beetles (contact effect)

Less effective against: Soil pests, stem borers (spray can't reach), hard-bodied beetles with waxy coating.

Safety Notes

โš ๏ธ Nicotine is toxic to mammals including humans. Wear gloves when preparing and applying. Avoid inhaling spray mist.

  • Do not apply within 7 days of harvest for leafy vegetables
  • Do not spray during flowering if bees are active (neem + tobacco are bee-toxic at higher concentrations; spray in evening after bees return to hive)
  • Store out of reach of children
